For as long as I can remember, I've loved watching old films. Maybe it was because I learned as a kid that Turner Classic Movies didn't have commercials, so flipping to it felt like a calm departure from the other advertising-laden networks whose channel numbers I also knew by heart. At first, I watched classic films with curiosity, but then I got to know them as time-capsuled stories that can still be entertaining—yes, even in black and white.

As our story opens, Tom Brown and his best friend are mourning at the grave of Dr.

Oddly though, this masterpiece of film is almost an anti-movie. It announces itself as theater. When it opens, we hear the three knocks that traditionally announce the beginning of a play in the French theater, and the fake curtain on the screen rises.
